It’s the most wonderful time of the year — unless you’re stressing about staying on track with your weight loss. But don’t panic: There’s a way to enjoy the season without skipping a beat on your journey. Keep reading to learn how.

Holiday parties are great for gathering with loved ones, but they aren’t the best place for those on a health journey. When it comes to weight loss around the holidays, many of us think about cakes and pies, but alcoholic and sugary drinks can just as easily derail your progress.

Many of our Metabolic Medical Center patients are reducing alcoholic and sugary drinks while on their weight loss journey. Meridith Womick, MD, and the entire team of doctors and health coaches are here with a comprehensive guide to healthy drinking through the holiday season.

BYOB

If you’re hosting an event, try using alternative recipes for healthier twists on holiday classics like dairy-free egg nog, low-sugar apple cider, or hot cocoa with skim milk.

If you know an event may be full of temptations, consider bringing your own drinks with you. A thermos of herbal tea, a bottle of fruit seltzer, or a healthy mocktail means you can still enjoy a tasty beverage without undermining your health progress.

Buddy up

It’s always a good idea to call in support when heading into a holiday event. If you’re comfortable, tell hosts or a fellow guest about your health goals. Hosts may be able to offer you healthy alternatives while your friends can help you sidestep temptation and stay on track.

Have an exit strategy

Maybe the party you’re heading into tends to get out of hand or the stress of visiting your in-laws triggers your cravings. We recommend having an exit strategy, whether that’s volunteering to be a designated driver or having an excuse to leave before you overindulge.

Unfortunately, many holiday parties feature open bars and indulgent treats. If staying on track seems daunting, don’t be afraid to RSVP “no.” Your true friends understand that you’re taking this year to focus on your wellness journey and want to protect your health.

Create new traditions

Too often, we equate holiday celebrations with overindulgence but you can make new ones. Grab your friends and start a new tradition, such as a holiday walk, a seasonal movie marathon, or volunteering in your community.

Your new traditions can keep you on track and fill your plate with time spent with loved ones.
